The fort at Pevensey used to be one of nine similar forts in southern and eastern Britain during the Roman period. We think it was built around AD 290, and was occupied by solders, sailors, and possibly their families! I have been studying the fort and the castle using scientific equipment in order to better understand what it looked like in the past, and what it was like to live there.

Note for teachers: This site is aimed for pupils in Key Stage 3 and has developed in consultation with teachers and pupils at Pevensey and Westham Primary School. The archaeological work at Pevensey presented here (Studying the Castle Using Science) has been funded by a generous grant from the International Society for Archaeological Prospection. This site and the hard copy learning materials are the legacy of the grant funding. Although the grant-funded work has completed, fieldwork is still ongoing and this page will continue to be maintained.
